Zelensky comments on the withdrawal of the Armed Forces from Vuhledar
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has commented on the withdrawal of the Defense Forces from Vuhledar in Donetsk region, for the first time. According to him, to deter the Russian offensive, more help from the West is needed.
The Ukrainian leader said this at a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Kyiv on Thursday, October 3.
Ukrainian soldiers leave Vuhledar
Following the withdrawal of troops from Vuhledar, the Head of State was asked how Ukraine would continue to contain the Russian offensive.
"We are very persistent in seeking the use of long-range weapons. Without such weapons, we cannot stop Russia from using them against us and destroying everything," Zelensky replied.
According to him, when Russia destroys the positions of Ukrainian soldiers, they need to preserve their lives because they are far more important than any constructions.
"Because these are our people, the citizens of Ukraine, so it is absolutely right for them to withdraw and save themselves. These are absolutely correct steps. That's why we are asking for the necessary permissions. Can Russia be stopped without that? For the time being, this is one of the ways to strengthen Ukraine," the Ukrainian leader said.
Previously, on October 1, the "DeepState" interactive combat map of Ukraine showed that Russian forces had captured Vuhledar. The head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, Vadym Filashkin, also warned about the approaching enemy forces to the city.
By October 2, the Armed Forces of Ukraine officially confirmed the withdrawal from Vuhledar. The "Khortytsia" operational-strategic group reported that the enemy had managed to deploy reserves for flanking strikes, which exhausted the defense of the Ukrainian units.
