BBC identifies over 80,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine
The BBC, together with the Russian media outlet Mediazona and volunteers, were able to identify the names of 80,973 Russian soldiers who died during the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The analysis was based on open data.
This was reported by the Russian service of the BBC on Friday, November 29.
Russia's losses in the war in Ukraine
According to the publication, many of the Russian military die within two to four weeks of being sent to the front. 22% of the total number of confirmed losses on the Russian side are volunteers. It is noted that the percentage of losses among them has increased compared to 2023.
The proportion of convicts sent to the front from prison is, on the contrary, decreasing. In November 2023, they accounted for 26% of all casualties, and now they account for 18%.
Currently, the leaders in terms of confirmed losses are Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, and Sverdlovsk region. However, the situation in these regions varies significantly.
"On a per capita basis, Tyva, Buryatia, and Altai are leading in terms of the number of losses. The lowest mortality rates are observed in Moscow and St. Petersburg," the publication notes.
They also add that at least 52% of all those killed were people who were not affiliated with the Russian army at the outbreak of the war. The journalists note that the actual number of Russians who joined the army from the "civilian" population and died at the front is much higher. This is explained by the fact that analysts have not been able to determine exactly how 28% of the dead they identified got to the front.
As a reminder, Ukrainian border guards continue to destroy the enemy. Soldiers from the Gart Brigade delivered a powerful artillery strike on enemy positions.
The Ukrainian military demonstrated how they delivered precision strikes on the enemy and destroyed tanks, armored personnel carriers, armored personnel carriers, trucks and infantry.
