On Monday, December 9, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of joining the North Atlantic Alliance. According to him, a "pause" in the Russian-Ukrainian war will not provide any security guarantees without this.

Zelenskyy said this during a meeting with the candidate for Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz.

Ceasefire in Ukraine

According to him, Ukraine needs security guarantees for a ceasefire, for example, an invitation to NATO. We also need to strengthen the army with long-range systems with ATACMS, Taurus, Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles to hit military targets on the territory of the Russian Federation.

"If there is a pause while Ukraine is not in NATO, and even if we had an invitation, and we were not in NATO, and there is a pause, then who will guarantee us any security?" Zelenskyy noted.

He noted that we can think about and work on the idea of French President Emmanuel Macron on the introduction of part of the troops of a particular country into the territory of Ukraine for security guarantees before joining NATO.

The President believes that at the same time we should have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will be in the EU and NATO.

"Understanding our future, these would be very effective guarantees," Zelenskyy added.

Let us recall that only last week Russia used almost 500 guided aerial bombs, more than 400 drones, and almost 20 missiles.

Zelenskyy also plans to call the US President Joe Biden to discuss Ukraine's invitation to NATO.
