US soldier on why he fights for Ukraine
A U.S. soldier fighting for Ukraine told us what motivates him. The man has been through Afghanistan, and the experience he gained there is helping him now.
Murray, a fighter with the International Legion of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, told about this in a podcast on the Ukrainian Jenny meets YouTube channel.
Why an American is fighting for Ukraine
An American legionnaire, when asked about his motivation, said he feels like he’s "doing what he’s supposed to do." This helps him adapt to the conditions of war.
"I think I have the motivation, and I can't give it up for these reasons that I definitely have. There were moments when I was just going mad with fear," the soldier said.
According to the American, death is something all professional soldiers face, and it is a challenge.
"Soldiers have to deal with it in their own way, but it's a challenge. The brain does interesting things to protect itself from trauma. And that's a huge part of every soldier's job," Murray shares.
The man noted that some things stop being shocking when you see them multiple times. But in any case, it's very difficult to get used to death when it's someone close. He clarified that he had gone through such difficult situations when he lost close friends in Afghanistan.
"It was very hard. After that, I had to learn how to deal with these emotions and the psychological effects of PTSD, and come to terms with what I saw there. It's something I've already worked through," he explained.
According to Murray, it’s this experience that helps him endure the horrific things he sees in the war in Ukraine.
As a reminder, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are experiencing a significant shortage of officers, which led to the adoption of a bill allowing foreign nationals to serve under contract. This was reported by Member of Parliament Oleksiy Honcharenko.
Earlier, Novyny.LIVE wrote that the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a bill allowing foreigners to sign contracts with the Armed Forces.
