The bodies of 757 fallen soldiers have been returned to Ukraine. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) assisted in the repatriation activities.

This was reported by the press service of the Coordinating Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War (CHPOW) on Friday, January 24.

Ukraine returns bodies of fallen defenders

The Coordination Headquarters reported that as a result of the repatriation activities, the bodies of 757 fallen defenders were returned to Ukraine.

Among the returned "shield" heroes are:

  • 451 from the Donetsk axis;
  • 71 from the Bakhmut axis;
  • 51 from the Vuhledar axis;
  • 13 from the Luhansk axis;
  • 137 from the Zaporizhzhia axis;
  • 34 dead were returned from morgues on the territory of the Russian Federation.

The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War added that the return of the fallen soldiers was made possible through the joint efforts of staff from the Coordination Headquarters, the Central Civil-Military Cooperation Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Joint Center of the Security Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, the Office of the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, the Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons under Special Circumstances, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine, and other structures of Ukraine's Security and Defense Sector.

"We express our gratitude for the assistance of the International Committee of the Red Cross," the statement said.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine personnel are responsible for transporting the repatriated fallen Heroes to designated state specialized institutions. They also facilitate the handover of the deceased to representatives of law enforcement agencies within the Ministry of Internal Affairs system and forensic medical examination facilities under the Ministry of Health system.

"Law enforcement investigators, together with the expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will identify the victims as soon as possible," the Coordination Center summarized.

As a reminder, in December 2024, the bodies of 503 fallen Ukrainian soldiers were returned to the government-controlled territory.

Also, in November 2024, an exchange of the dead took place, during which the bodies of 563 fallen servicemen were returned to Ukraine.
