UK ex-ministers call for troops to be sent to Ukraine
UK ex-ministers of defence Grant Shapps and Gavin Williamson call on London to send peacekeepers to Ukraine. The officials believe that their country should help Kyiv become a NATO member.
This was reported by The Telegraph.
British peacekeepers in Ukraine
As you know, Grant Shapps, the British Defence Secretary from 2023 to 2024, and Gavin Williamson (2017 to 2019) have both advocated sending peacekeepers to Ukraine.
Shapps noted that British troops’ participation in a post-war peacekeeping force would be a welcome step, but it is only a small part of what Ukraine really needs. He added that London should help Kyiv become a NATO member:
"Anything less would betray Ukraine’s courage and the principles we stand for," he emphasized.
At the same time, Williamson added that Ukraine’s security must be supported from the outside in the future, "whether that be through NATO or countries like the UK that can be seen as reliable partners".
As a reminder, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently answered whether it is possible to deploy peacekeepers in Ukraine. According to him, there is already a positive response from some country leaders.
The day before, the UK announced that it might send troops to Ukraine. Defence Secretary John Healey was the first government official to publicly support the move.
