Zelenskyy explains why Ukraine cannot de-occupy land now
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has declared his desire to end the war in Ukraine as soon as possible. At the same time, the country wants to return the territories occupied by Russia through diplomatic means.
Mr. Zelenskyy said this in an interview published by Kyodo News on Monday, December 2.
Return of Ukrainian territories from Russian control
Thus, Ukraine wants the war to end as soon as possible and for Russia to return part of its territory through diplomacy. According to Zelenskyy, this will be possible once the country's membership in NATO is determined.
At the same time, he emphasized the "insufficient" support from partners due to Russia's rapid advance in the east. The President called on NATO to invite Ukraine to negotiate membership as soon as possible.
The Ukrainian leader confirmed that it is currently difficult to return some of the occupied territories, including Crimea, by force because the army lacks the strength to do so.
"This is true. We must find diplomatic solutions," Zelenskyy said.
But he emphasized that such steps can only be considered when Ukraine is strong enough to prevent Russia from starting a new war.
Earlier, Zelenskyy said that Ukraine would never legally recognize Russia's occupation of its territories. Joining NATO and the EU are key security guarantees for our country.
He also named three countries that are the main skeptics of Ukraine's accession to NATO.
