Key events in 1000 days of war — AFU infographic
Tuesday, November 19 will mark 1,000 days since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which has become the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II. However, the invasion on February 24, 2022 was preceded by eight years of hybrid warfare.
This was reported to Novyny.LIVE by the Main Communication Department of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Chronicle of the main events of 1000 days of resistance
The beginning of the invasion
At 3:40 a.m., Russian troops attacked Ukraine from the north, east, south, and territory of Belarus.
Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a "special military operation", directly copying the actions of Hitler's invasion of Poland in 1939.
Battles for Kyiv and the north of Ukraine
As a result of the heroic actions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Russians fled and the occupied parts of Kyiv, Chernihiv, and Sumy regions of Ukraine were liberated.
Putin calls this a "gesture of goodwill", and the whole world learns about the massacres of Ukrainian civilians by the Russian army on the outskirts of Kyiv — in Bucha, Irpin, Borodianka, and Hostomel.
Meanwhile, the heroic defense of Azovstal in Mariupol continues at the cost of superhuman efforts.
The "Moskva" sank
On the 50th day of the war, April 14, 2022, Ukrainian forces sank the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, the cruiser Moskva.
This started the Battle of the Black Sea, which led to the expulsion of the Russian fleet from Crimea and the restriction of its operations in the northern part of the Black Sea.
Liberation of Zmiinyi Island
On the 127th day of the invasion, June 30, 2022, the Russians retreated from Zmiinyi Island, allowing grain supplies to resume via sea trade routes in the Black Sea.
Putin again calls it a "gesture of goodwill".
Kharkiv counteroffensive
On the 195th day of the invasion, September 6, 2022, the "Kharkiv Counteroffensive" by Ukrainian forces began, resulting in the liberation of about 10,000 square kilometers.
Mass graves and evidence of torture and executions of Ukrainians by the occupiers were discovered in Izium and Balakliia.
Liberation of Kherson
Kherson was liberated on November 11, 2022, on the 261st day of the war.
It was the only regional center occupied by the Russian army at the beginning of the large-scale invasion.
Putin's arrest warrant
On March 17, 2023, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Putin for forcibly transferring children from the occupied territories to Russia. This happened on the 387th day of the invasion.
Massive attacks on Russian military facilities
In 2023, Ukraine began launching massive attacks on military facilities in Russia and the temporarily occupied territories.
In particular, on September 22, 2023, the Black Sea Fleet headquarters in Sevastopol was attacked.
In January 2024, an A-50 radar detection aircraft was shot down over the Sea of Azov.
In the fall of this year, a large arsenal was destroyed in the city of Toropets, Tver region.
Global Peace Summit
The first Global Peace Summit began in Switzerland on June 15, 2024.
It was attended by 101 states and international organizations. There were no Russians at the summit. It was the 843rd day of the invasion.
Kursk operation
On the 895th day of the invasion, August 6, 2024, the Ukrainian Defense Forces launched an operation in the Kursk region of Russia.
The main stated military goals are to divert part of the Russian forces from Donbas, limit Russia's ability to shell the city of Sumy, and transfer the war to enemy territory.
The stated political goals include the possibility of transferring the war to the territory of Russia.
Russia's losses in 1000 days of war
During the 1000 days of the war, Russia's sanitary losses, including the dead and wounded, exceeded 700,000 people. Thus, the Putin regime kills and injures more than 700 of its citizens every day.
At the same time, according to the Levada Center, in February 2024, 77% of Russians continued to support the war against Ukraine. This shows that the invasion and war crimes are not only "Putin's war" but also the result of the imperialist aspirations of the majority of the Russian population.
As a reminder, Novyny.LIVE journalists made a story about the bloodiest enemy attacks on Odesa region to mark 1000 days of war.
We also talked about the sports infrastructure facilities that Ukraine has lost over the 1000 days of war.
