Russian troops have significantly strengthened the protection of the international border with Ukraine since 2022, refusing to use conscripts and potential deserters to guard it. In addition, Russia has deployed significant forces to protect the border and created a separate group to fulfill this task.

This is stated in the report of the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

Russia may form a new battalion to protect its borders

The ISW report states that these data are based on information from a Russian military blogger, but there is no independent confirmation of these statements.

According to another Kremlin-linked blogger, after the Ukrainian Armed Forces liberated a number of settlements in the Kursk region, Russia intensified recruitment of volunteers.

In particular, many convicts, including former fighters of the private military company Wagner, are fighting in the Sudja area.

They take part in combat operations as part of Russia's Project K, but the blogger did not disclose the details of this project.

Another Russian military blogger with ties to the Airborne Forces said that the 214th Separate Special OPFOR Battalion, which has been operating since 2022, was reorganized into an air assault battalion.

According to him, the battalion focused on informational activities in 2024, including producing films about its operations, but before that, it participated in combat on the Bakhmut front.

Recently, the command of the Unmanned Systems Forces showed a video of how they managed to destroy a Russian air defense system in the Zaporizhzhia axis.

Also, a large-scale investigation by Reuters revealed close ties between large Russian chemical companies and Russia's military sector.
