Museum tanks and more — EU discloses details of AFU exercises

About 18,000 Ukrainian soldiers were trained in Germany. In particular, old Soviet tanks were used for the training.

Instructors from 17 countries taught about 18,000 Ukrainian soldiers in Germany how to operate modern tanks and precision air defense systems, and also passed on skills to snipers, engineers, and paramedics.

Ukraine sought to conduct training in conditions closer to real combat operations and on outdated equipment, including Soviet tanks. Therefore, the German military borrowed tanks from museums to enhance their practical experience.

According to the head of the EU Special Training Command, Andreas Marlow, such systems are used by the Russian side and sometimes they set booby traps in abandoned vehicles. Therefore, the Ukrainian military was taught how not to provoke an explosion if they found such devices on the battlefield and opened the door.

In October, NATO conducted large-scale military exercises. They involved more than 60 aircraft from 13 NATO countries.
